Privacy Policy

Cheers is a live map of tonight's gigs, built and operated by Deep South Software L.L.C., an Alabama limited liability company ("Deep South Software," "we," "us"). This policy explains what information we collect, why we collect it, and the choices you have. It covers the Cheers mobile app and the cheers.fm website (together, the "Service").
The short version: we collect the minimum we need to run a live-music app. We do not run ads, we do not use analytics or tracking SDKs, we never track your location in the background, and we never sell your data.
Information we collect
Account information. When you create an account we collect your email address and password, or — if you use Sign in with Apple — the name and email address Apple shares with us (which may be a private relay address). You also choose a handle and display name, and can optionally add a profile photo.
Content you share. Comments on shows, photos and short video clips you post from a show, crowd-level and vibe signals you submit while checked in, shows you save or mark as going, and the artists, venues, and friends you connect with.
Check-ins. When you check in at a venue we record the venue, the show, and when your check-in started and ended. To confirm you are actually there, the app sends your current coordinates once; our server compares them to the venue's location and stores only the pass/fail result. Your raw coordinates are never stored.
Location. Location is used only while the app is open — to verify check-ins and to show gigs near you. We do not track location in the background and we do not keep a history of where you have been.
Device information. The app generates a random identifier when it is installed — it is never derived from your hardware — and our servers store only a one-way hash of it, which we use for rate limiting and abuse prevention. If you enable notifications, we store a push token for your device.
Venue and artist verification. If you claim a venue or artist page, we collect the information needed to verify you represent it, which can include a business email confirmation and, for some claims, a photo ID or utility bill. These documents are stored privately, are visible only to our review team, and are permanently deleted 30 days after your claim is decided — we keep only the document type and upload date.
On the website. cheers.fm stores your chosen city and display preferences in your browser's local storage. We do not use advertising cookies or cross-site tracking.
What we don't do
- We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information.
- We do not use third-party advertising, analytics, or tracking SDKs.
- We do not track your location in the background or store your coordinates.
- We do not access your contacts.
- We do not track you across other companies' apps or websites, and we do not use hardware identifiers.
How we use your information
- To run the Service: showing gigs, powering check-ins, and the live read on a room.
- To display the content you choose to share.
- To verify that check-ins and live signals come from people who are really there.
- To send the notifications you have turned on.
- To keep the Service safe: rate limiting, moderation, and abuse prevention.
- To respond when you contact us, and to comply with legal obligations.
Who can see what
- Public: your handle, display name, and profile photo, plus the comments and media you post to a show. A show's page — including its comments, media, and aggregated crowd signal — may also appear on cheers.fm.
- Friends: your check-in while it is active, so friends can find you at a show.
- Only you: your check-in history, saved and going lists, and notification preferences.
- Aggregated: crowd and vibe signals are combined into an anonymous, venue-level read; they are never shown as coming from you.
Service providers
We share data only with the providers that run the Service, and only what they need to do their job:
- Supabase — hosts our database, authentication, file storage, and server functions.
- Apple — Sign in with Apple and push notification delivery.
- Expo (EAS) — routes push notifications to your device.
- Map providers — maps are rendered with Apple or Google Maps in the app and with Carto or Mapbox tiles on the website; loading map imagery sends standard network requests (such as your IP address) to those providers.
Our event listings are gathered from venues, artists, and public sources such as Ticketmaster and Bandsintown. Data flows from those sources to us — we do not send them anything about you. We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the safety of our users.
Retention and deletion
We keep your information while your account is active. You can delete your account at any time from the You tab in the app — this permanently removes your profile, check-ins, comments, photos and videos, follows, and push tokens. Venue or artist pages you managed become unclaimed but remain listed, since they are directory entries rather than personal data. Verification documents are deleted on the 30-day schedule described above.
You can also email us at [email protected] to request deletion.
Your choices and rights
- Choose which notifications you get in the app's settings, or turn them off in iOS Settings.
- Location permission is optional — without it you can still browse everything, though verified check-ins need it.
- Edit your handle, display name, and photo in the app at any time.
- Delete your account in the app, no questions asked.
Depending on where you live, you may have legal rights to access, correct, export, or erase your personal information. Email us at [email protected] and we will honor them.
Children
Cheers is not directed to children. You must be at least 18 years old to use the Service (see our Terms of Service), and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If we learn we have, we will delete it.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit, database access is restricted row by row, media uploads go through short-lived signed URLs, and verification documents live in private storage. No system is perfectly secure, so if you find a vulnerability, please tell us at [email protected].
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will post the new version here and update the date at the top. For material changes we will give you notice in the app or by email.
